Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This graphic shows the path of the sun captured at 2pm each day for the period of one year. The vertical axis shows angle up from the horizon with 90 degrees at the top being right above your head. The horizontal axis shows that the sun appears in the south south west at this time of day in Dundee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do we see an unequal figure of eight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The earth is tilted at 23\u00b0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earth\u2019s orbit is an ellipse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The orbital speed changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Johannes Kepler was one of the most important scientists who discovered the three laws of planetary motion. These describe the elliptical path all planets follow as they orbit around a star such as in our solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see an image of Kepler\u2019s 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Law cast in the bronze sundial sculpture.
